URGENT CHRISTMAS EVE UPDATE

We are writing to share a difficult decision that was made last night. Members of the Worship and Music Committee, members from the Re-launch Group, and Rev. Nancy discussed a recommendation that has come from Chinook Winds Region Executive Minister Treena Duncan, that churches consider holding worship online only – including Christmas Eve. Given the fast-growing numbers associated with the new variant, she includes this message from Dr David Keegan: a committed United Church member, Alberta doctor and professor at the University of Calgary.

He said, “I suggest that The United Church of Canada has the opportunity to save many lives, prevent hospital admissions and long-term disability, and to focus on the social justice and life orientation of Jesus by switching to online services for Christmas/Christmas Eve. Let’s give the gift of life this Christmas.”

Last night, we made the decision to move to ONLINE ONLY beginning Christmas Eve. And to re-evaluate the returning of in-person worship at the January Board meeting.

It’s not an easy decision…given the significance of Christmas Eve to us all, the chance that we might not be in our building much longer, and the very tight timeline to effectively communicate such a significant decision.

We need to thank these committee members for their concern for the spiritual well-being, and the health and safety of our congregation.  Finding the balance is not an easy task. For all of us, this decision is very disappointing, but hopefully there will be understanding about the need for safety.

In addition to social media and email, we ask that you think about who at Northminster does not get email or have access to social media – please consider calling them to let them know.

Please know that the story of Christmas – with our traditions of carols, and stories, and candles – will still continue online. Christmas is alive and well as we celebrate the birth of Christ. Stop by the church Friday morning if you would like to pick up candles to use at home.

Please join us on Facebook Live at 7 PM, as well as anytime after on Facebook and YouTube.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Rev. Nancy.
