PART TIME: 30 Hours per month

Northminster believes in ministry within the congregation and beyond its walls. We value partnerships we already have within the community.  – including area churches, Community Associations, Social Services Agencies, and more. We believe it is important to work as partners in the community and hope to further nurture and expand these partnerships.

Northminster United Church is in a neighbourhood that is in transition. In many ways, it still consists of a high need, transient demographic. But within the last five years, many older homes have been demolished and replaced by new, high-end duplexes and single family homes. There are many new people in the neighbourhood to connect with.  Northminster is also located on a busy commuter route. On a regular basis we welcome people to events who tell us they saw advertising on our sign as they drove past or rode the bus on their way to work.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this position are to create a two way link between the congregation and wider community by:

Raising awareness of Northminster in the surrounding communities in North Calgary.

Continuing to nurture and build partnerships in the area that will help Northminster expand its ministry – representing us at various community organizations.

WORK:
The work of the Coordinator will be split into three main areas.  This work includes Community Engagement, Communications, and working with the Northminster United Church Community. 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (60% of time)
The Coordinator will be Northminster’s representative in the wider community.  The coordinator will attend local community association meetings like Highland Park and other local organization meetings. He or she will maintain relationships with neighbouring congregations, and create new and maintain existing contacts within the local community. This work will include networking with City or related staff who work and support the local community. The purpose of this work is to raise the profile of Northminster and to see where Northminster can partner or link with the surrounding community.

COMMUNICATIONS (20% of time)

The Coordinator will work with the Communications Committee to share the message of Northminster United Church.  This will include working with the Communications Committee on the community ads (Christmas and Easter), quarterly newsletters, and occasional postings on social media.  

NORTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH (20% of time)
To be effective in their role and foundation to their work will be a strong understanding and relationship with Northminster United and its vision for ministry. The Coordinator will be encouraged to attend worship and some events to know the congregation, its members and its work. The Coordinator will also work the Steering Committee on the work of the position.

ACCOUNTABILITY
The Community Engagement Coordinator will be accountable to:
The Steering Committee for all work activities. It’s membership includes representatives from the Board, Communications, Mission and Outreach, Ministry and Personnel, Congregational Life and the Minister. And to the Ministry and Personnel Committee for all personnel matters including salary and reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Passion for Justice and Building Inclusive Christian Community
Organized, self motivated and able to work independently.
This person has excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
Comfortable in new settings and speaking to small and large groups.
Familiar with the United Church of Canada and its theology.
Computer skills and a good understanding of new and trending technology
Ability to network interpersonally, socially and online.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Part-time position of 30 hours per month from September 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020.  This is a contract position with option to renew at the end of the first year.  The position will include some work during the daytime, evening and some Sunday mornings.  Salary will be paid monthly. 

The successful candidate will need to provide three references and a completed criminal record check.
